SEYMORE, TN - On March 11th, Caden Mullinax and the team traveled to 411 Motor Speedway to compete in The Tennessean and came out with a successful sixteenth place finish.
Round three of the Schaeffer's Spring National Series was originally scheduled to take place at North Georgia on Friday of March 10th, but after rain forced the track to cancel that race, The Tennessean became the third round. The first annual Tennessean was the highest paying dirt race in the country that weekend and was scheduled for seventy-one laps.
The team arrived at 411 Motor Speedway Friday afternoon for an evening practice session. During the practice Caden made forty-three laps over four sessions where the team tried multiple different setups in order to make the black and gold number m2 faster.
Saturday was race day, where Caden would compete alongside forty-five fellow Super Late Models for the $15,000 prize. Not only was this the highest paying race of the week but it also had the most competitive field in the country with racers Mike Marlar, Jimmy Owens, Cory Hedgecock, Dale McDowell, and many more of the world's top Late Model drivers.
Caden entered the weekend seventeenth in the Schaeffer's Spring National's points and this weekend looked promising for the team to break into the top ten. When racing began at 2:00pm, Caden hit the track running with a good practice session.
After fixing a small oil leak on the car, it was time for qualifying where Caden would end up sixteenth in his group with a lap time of 15.908 seconds. This put him starting eight in his heat race where only the top four transferred out.
Caden would move forward in his heat race and finish seventh, three spots out of the transfering into the feature. Starting on the third row of the B-Main, Caden would again move forward and get faster but still end up short of the final transfer spot in fifth.
Due to his position in the points, Caden would pick up a provisional to start the feature race. The seventy-one lap feature event would be the longest race that Caden has entered, and it would prove to be a war of attrition.
Caden gained a few spots in the early laps but the hard tires on Caden's car took longer than expected to warm up and fire. Due to a couple of early cautions, Caden stayed on the lead lap which allowed him to move up to nineteenth.
Two more quick cautions followed before a long fifty lap green flag stint began and Caden moved his way up the field up to sixteenth. When Cory Hedgecock took the checkered flag Caden had secured himself valuable points in the series and a very successful race.
With that solid finish, Caden has now moved up to eighth in the points standings with 421 points. The team plans to complete the rest of the Spring Nationals season with a top five finish in their targets.
Now the team will take a break so that they can recoup and get ready for another few weeks of being on the road. The next planned races are rounds four and five of the series starting with Buckshot Speedway, March 31st, and East Alabama Motor Speedway, April 1st.
